Legal Sports Betting States

CourthouseOnline sports betting is now completely legal in fifteen states across the nation, with more to come in 2021.

The states listed below are fully legal online without any restrictions. Other states such as Nevada have restrictions such as requiring signup in-person at a casino, or Oregon, Montana, and D.C. which have legalized, but only have one operator which is the state lottery.

New Jersey
New Jersey

New JerseyThe Garden State was the first state in the country to legalize gambling after the repeal of PASPA. NJ has the most options of any state in the US, with 16 books now online, and is almost always the first place a new company begins its online operations.

PAPA set a high bar for sportsbooks with its taxation on sports betting, which has meant that despite one of the largest populations in the legalized sphere, some bigger players such as Pointsbet and William Hill have stayed away. The sports-mad people of Philly still have plenty of books to choose from though.

ColoradoColorado legalized online betting on May 1st, 2020, and has gone on to become one of the front-runners with over ten online sportsbooks already available for residents of The Centennial State.

West Virginia
West Virginia

The smallest legal state of West Virginia had a rocky start to its legal online sports betting, with BetLucky being the first book online in late 2018. After the company went under though, no apps were available until the bigger players arrived in 2019. Mountain State residents now have plenty of options though.

TennesseeThe Volunteer State legalized online sports betting toward the end of 2020, and the major operators came online pretty quickly. Expect TN to become one of the major hubs for online sports betting with the biggest online brands like BetMGM, Fanduel, and Draftkings all offering betting here.

One of the smaller states to legalize online, Iowa did have an in-person registration requirement until January 1st, 2021. There are fewer books available here than most states, with notable online presences being DraftKings, William Hill, and Pointsbet.

BetRivers was the first sportsbook to take legal online bets in The Prairie State, on June 18, 2020. Bigger players such as Fanduel, Draftkings, Pointsbet, and William Hill joined the fray, and more books will come online in 2021. Late in the year, three online-only sportsbook skins will be available, meaning a company can take bets without a connection to a brick-and-mortar casino.

About Free Bets

Free Bets at online sportsbooks have been a popular marketing tool around the World for some years now.

As sports betting legalizes across the United States, sportsbooks here are offering generous signup bonuses to entice new customers to try their product.

Some offers are better than others, and every offer comes with terms and conditions that you should be aware of before signing up.

Risk-Free Bets

One of the more popular bonuses on offer is the risk-free first bet.

This means that once you've registered with a sportsbook and made your first deposit, they will cover your first bet if it loses. Most of the time this will be capped at $500.

Often you'll be required to place your first bet within 7 days of registration to be eligible, so be sure to have a bet in mind before you join.

Unibet Sportsbook

Unibet currently offers a risk-free first bet up to a massive $600 for customers in New Jersey and Indiana!

Deposit Bonuses

If you do have a strong bet in mind, you might want to consider the deposit bonus. This will add more funds to your balance before you've even placed a bet.

For example, some sportsbooks offer a matched first deposit bonus, often capped at $250 or $500. So if you were to deposit $250, they match it and you can begin betting with $500 total.

BetRivers Sportsbook

Join BetRivers in Colorado, Pennslyvania, Illinois or Indiana and your first deposit will be matched, upto a maximum of $250!

One thing to be aware of with this type of bonus is that you can't necessarily just bet the bonus money once and withdraw it. You will often be required to "play through" the bonus cash a certain number of times (called a rollover requirement).

On rare occasions though, some sportsbooks do offer just a 1x play-thru / rollover requirement. This is a great bonus to take advantage of.

Matched First Bet

Similar to the deposit match, the matched first bet gives you extra cash to bet, but only after you've placed your first wager.

So for example, if you deposit and bet $250 as your first bet with a new sportsbook, once that bet is settled, you will get an additional $250 in your account. Even if your bet won!

Ongoing Free Bets and Promos

Sportsbooks want to keep your business, so they often have ongoing promotions for their members. These can come in all sorts of shapes and sizes.

One popular offer is an insurance offer. For example, if you like to wager on first touchdown scorers in football, you can get your cashback (up to a maximum amount - often $50), if your player doesn't score the first TD, but does get on the board later.

You'll find similar themes in golf, where you can bet a player to finish top ten, and if they play well and finish top twenty (just missing out on your wager), you will still be paid out.

These promotions change daily, and we have a great current promotions section where you can keep tabs on the latest ones.
